{"id":1636,"date":"2024-06-19T08:02:06","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T13:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iamaw905.ca\/?p=1636"},"modified":"2024-06-18T21:06:13","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T02:06:13","slug":"union-members-and-allies-mark-injured-workers-day-in-locations-across-ontario","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iamaw905.ca\/?p=1636","title":{"rendered":"UNION MEMBERS AND ALLIES MARK INJURED WORKERS\u2019 DAY IN LOCATIONS ACROSS ONTARIO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ontario Federation of Labour issued this media release on GlobeNewswire on Saturday, June 1, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TORONTO, June 1, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) \u2013 The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) was pleased to support several events across Ontario today, as injured workers and their allies marked Injured Workers\u2019 Day in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor decades, injured workers have been leading the fight for justice for workers injured on the job,\u201d said Laura Walton, OFL President. \u201cWe echo their call for a comprehensive compensation system that covers all workers and real income supports that lift injured workers out of poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Toronto, over 100 people joined a rally at Queen\u2019s Park, which included speeches by injured workers and supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this week, Jamie West, ONDP MPP for Sudbury and Official Opposition Critic for Labour, spoke about his injured workers\u2019 bill, which passed second reading on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m advocating for June 1 to be officially proclaimed as Injured Workers Day in Ontario,\u201d said West. \u201cInjured workers should never feel invisible, and this day will ensure they are recognized by the government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rallies also took place today in London and Windsor, while injured workers in Thunder Bay marked the occasion on May 30. All events were led by the Ontario Network of Injured Workers\u2019 Groups (ONIWG).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we gather to commemorate our 41st Injured Workers\u2019 Day, we have much to celebrate, including recently announced reviews that should benefit injured migrant workers and the passage Thursday, on second reading, of MPP West\u2019s Injured Workers\u2019 Day bill,\u201d said Willy Noiles, Acting ONIWG President. \u201cWe look forward to seeing West\u2019s long overdue legislation becoming law in time for June 1, 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of April, the OFL launched its Injured Workers\u2019 Bill of Rights, an initiative to promote injured workers\u2019 demands among all workers in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile we fight to win the supports that injured workers urgently need, we also fight to ensure the best health and safety standards in all Ontario workplaces,\u201d added Walton. \u201cPrevention is key to ensure no worker becomes injured or ill at work, and that all workers make it home safe at the end of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ontario Federation of Labour represents 54 unions and one million workers in Ontario.
